This ’90s Lipstick Color Just Got Way Cooler Thanks to Pat McGrath

Dana Oliver

DKNY designers Dao–Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne’s Spring 2017 show was all about contrast. Edgy, oversized knits, hoodies, and pants dipped in soft white, blue, and orange hues made for a “Neo Soho” collection that was clearly influenced by the 1990s. And what lip color embodies the decade that gave us Aaliyah and urban couture? Dark brown.

The Lip: When you see lips that look like this, just know that’s all Pat McGrath. The makeup artist legend took chocolate brown lipstick — á la the ’90s — and made it “couture” by adding gold- and silver-flecked glitter.

This shimmering lip is easy to recreate, especially if you were lucky enough to score a McGrath’s Labs Lust 004 kit before they sold out online. Start by exfoliating and moisturizing your lips to get rid of dry, flakey skin. Then apply a dark brown lipstick (we recommend NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in Vancouver or Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Birkin Brown). Use your fingertips or a small eyeshadow brush to gently press loose glitter (try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Glitters) on top. Then use concealer to clean up mistakes and Scotch tape to pick up loose glitter.
