How to Do Brown Lipstick Right

This season, brown lipstick is back in a big way. The shade has always been one of my favorites and was actually the first color I created for my brand in 1991. After the popularity of bright pinks and reds in the ‘80s, brown lipstick offered a totally different lipcolor alternative. From deeper matte cocoa shades to paler pinky brown blends it was the color of the moment, and everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Kate Moss wore it. The ‘90s version involved matte color, paired with pale matte skin. To update the color in a way that feels current try these tricks:

? A natural, pinky brown shade is the perfect everyday neutral. Pair it with bright blush to liven up the look.

? If you choose a light brown that leans more towards nude, find one with warm undertones so you don’t look washed out.

? A rich brown/cinnamon hue is a beautiful option for holiday. Pair it with some soft shimmer on eyes, striking liner, and bold lashes.

? Try a richer, darker shade of brown for a statement lip.

? Skip the liner. Apply your lip color with a brush for an even, fresh look.

? Very glossy lips feel dated right now, if you want some sheen go with a sheer lipcolor.

? Make sure skin looks natural and foundation lets skin show through. A chalky, matte finish on skin immediately takes the look back to the ‘90s.
