Chris Evans hit the red carpet on Wednesday night for the premiere of his new movie and directorial debut, Before We Go, looking dapper as ever. With a five o’clock shadow and slicked back hair to complement his three-piece Dolce & Gabbana suit, we reached out to Jenn Streicher, the expert who groomed him for the big event, to find out exactly what she did, what she used, and what goes into prepping a guy for the red carpet.

First off, you know how female celebs often say they have a concept for their look, discussing their vision with stylists? Not so with guys. “Ninety-nine percent of the time we don’t even talk about it,” says Streicher. In fact, sitting in a makeup chair can be painfully awkward and uncomfortable for some actors. “I like to have a conversation with them during the process – it helps distract them so they forget what we’re doing. When working with women, I can linger, chat and it’s more of a conversation about what to use. Men, no lingering – they don’t want to spend a lot of time preparing.”

Likewise, guys don’t like to use a lot of products — or cop to using them. “Men don’t like to look like they are wearing makeup and they don’t like to use a lot of product, therefore choosing wisely is essential,” says Streicher. “They don’t want to use the word foundation or tinted moisturizer.” Instead, the expert focuses on skin care, typically starting their routine when the actor is fresh out of the shower. “Men need more hydration; they are not known for having hydrating skincare regimens. Most of the men that I groom have dehydrated skin.”

Streicher insists that all men should maintain a simple skin care routine in their daily lives, whether they’re heading to a big event or not. “They have to use a good cleanser, eye cream, a moisturizer, and lip product. If you can be consistent, you don’t need much else.” The groomer used all products by RéVive on Evans for the premiere, including the brand’s Moisturizing Renewal Cream Retextruizing Hydrator ($195), Moisturizing Renewal Eye Cream Ultra Retexturizing Hydratior ($150), and Intensité Moisturizing Lip Balm ($60). “If his skin looks great, that’s all he needs.”

Some cosmetics do come into play when actors have daytime appearances, however, to prevent shine. “You can give women a powder to touch up during the event — guys will never do that,” says Streicher. “Thinking ahead in that aspect, nighttime I don’t use powder. Daytime, when it’s hot, always powder.”

When it comes to hair, men are a little open-minded to trying new things. “Guys are absolutely into suggestions for hair and hair products,” says Streicher. “Also, I always do eyebrows, and guys totally appreciate it.” Beards have been a trend on and off the red carpet, but the expert says it’s best to stick with whatever facial hair you’re comfortable with. For Evans, at the moment, it’s a five o’clock shadow. “Yes – he has some stubble,” she says. “Details tend to get tricky with grooming; I personally love a man with stubble, so I would never discourage it. “

It sounds like a lot of work, but that doesn’t mean men need to suddenly become high-maintenance in front of the mirror. “It took me 12 minutes to groom Chris’ face and hair [for the premiere],” says Streicher. “I’ve been working with Chris for 10 years — when you have that relationship for that long, you have the routine down. I know what he likes, what he doesn’t, and what essential steps to take.” With practice, any dude can get his personal routine down to minutes and see great benefits for both his appearance and his confidence.

Streicher’s last words of advice when it comes to grooming: “Never underestimate a nice fragrance,” she says. “When a guy smells good it goes a long way!”
