What Justin Bieber’s Face Tattoo Will Look Like in 30 Years

Justin Bieber just got a face tat, and everybody has something to say about it. The 22-year-old singer’s latest of more than 50 tattoos is a tiny cross just below his left eye. “Justin came in last night and decided on a small cross near the corner of his eye,” tattoo artist Jonboy told Us. “It represents his journey in finding purpose with God.” The tattoo is small and pretty subtle as far as face tats go, but to ask everybody’s favorite question, what about when he’s 50? Luckily Biebs will never go through the struggle of finding a job with face tattoos, but nobody is immune to aging. We asked a top derm and tattoo artist to weigh in.

“As tattoos age, their color fades and they lose definition” says top dermatologist Sejal Shah MD. “Borders become fuzzy. This is especially true if the tattoo is exposed to the sun as one on the face would be.” And while fading can be touched up, changing skin can cause other, less fixable changes. “As the underlying skin changes with age, which varies based on the individual and the area, the tattoo can also become distorted.” Dr. Shah says that the under eye area is particularly susceptible to this. “Under the eye I would expect the skin to lose elasticity over time and become loose, wrinkled and crepey. This will alter the appearance of the tattoo.” Luckily for Bieber, laser tattoo removal has become very effective.

Top tattoo artist Yoni Zilber of New York Adorned doubts that Bieber’s tattoo will look good in 30 years. “The face is always exposed to the sun,” he says. “Lines might bleed in and be thicker than they are today.” So, while Bieber’s tattoo is tiny and subtle today, its refinement and delicacy will likely diminish. That said anybody with upwards of 50 tattoos should be prepared for them to fade, expand, and change with age. “Tattoos are supposed to get older with the body,” says Zilber. And if you think that Biebs should have waited until he’s older to get this tattoo, Zilber assures that new tattoos don’t look good on old skin. To each his own, right?
