Why Do People Keep Doing ‘100 Layers’ Videos?
By now you’ve probably noticed that your social media feed has been inundated with “100 layers of…” beauty videos.
First, it began with the “100 Layers of Nail Polish” video, which was strange but oddly mesmerizing, garnering well over 14 million views. Then other similar videos started following popping up, with 100 layers of mascara and 100 layers of liquid lipsticks soon surfacing (both of which were just as horrifying as you could imagine). However, the most recent addition to the 100 layers themed videos has many beauty lovers cringing.
The latest video created by Swedish vlogger Josefin Lillakas, is titled, “100 Layers of Foundation,” and shows Lillakas painting her face with a full one hundred layers of the the L'Oréal Paris True Match foundation ($11).
Considering the creepy outcome of the video, it all makes sense why going overboard on foundation is a huge makeup faux pas in the beauty world. One commenter put it best, showing that this video is purely for entertainment and in fact, is doing more harm than good for the vlogger: “The unexpected ending: 100 pimples .” See the horrifying video below:
So, what’s the deal with all of these “100 layers” videos anyway? Well, considering how popular they are on the internet, it’s no wonder why mid- to low level vloggers are posting their own “100 layers” videos.
Over one million people have already viewed Josefin’s foundation video, and as noted previously, the “100 Layers of Nail Polish” video has well over 14 million views. Considering media outlets and fans alike have been obsessing over these kinds of experimental tutorials, it’s no wonder regular vloggers are posting their own in the hopes of going viral.
However, if you’re not a beauty vlogger looking to go full on viral, it’s still a quick and easy way for regular people on YouTube to get their view count up temporarily. Just keep in mind, these videos are definitely not a service piece if you’re looking for a reputable makeup how to. The no-makeup, makeup look is still very much “in” at the moment.
