It is well known that 19-year-old actress and singer Zendaya has some of the best hair on the red carpet, and having a killer confidence and attitude to go along with the big hair looks. In February, she went viral for calling out Giuliana Rancic for “outrageously offensive” comments on her dreadlocks at the Oscars. In the September 2015, Mattel immortalized her deadlocks with a Zendaya Barbie doll. This week, the Chi spokesperson told People StyleWatch that contrary to popular belief, she wasn’t always confident about her hair. “Growing up, I wasn’t very confident in my curls,” the actress said. “It wasn’t like the hair that girls around me had. And nobody really knew what to do with my hair. My mom is white and my dad is black — they have two very different hair types.” Zendaya’s parents learned how to manage her hair together, in addition to watching YouTube tutorials. (Another “Stars: they’re just like us!” moment.)
Zendaya’s constantly changing hair looks have always made big splashes on the red carpet, from top knots to cornrows to Barbie curls (literally) to dreadlocks to pixie cuts — and this was just in 2015. “When I was younger, I was afraid to experiment with my look because I was worried about what people thought,” she said. “But as I’ve gotten older and become more confident in myself, I just don’t care.” Today, she posted a cryptic Instagram photo of herself with rainbow colored braids coiled into two buns on her head, her eyebrows painted purple along with green and blue eye makeup.“Something new…something beautiful #ComingSoon…” she captioned the photo.

This month, Zendaya debuted a short blonde wig on the cover of Kode magazine as part of the #GenerationNoir issue. She shared a photo from the magazine with a caption possibly alluding to bigger campaigns and covers this year: “And so it begins…” Last year, Zendaya appeared on covers of magazines like Ebony, Essence, Complex, Flare, Teen Vogue, and Hunger. She was also on the cover of Modeliste, a magazine she she lambasted for photoshopping her torso and hips. (The publication later retracted the issue and apologized.)

“I like who I am, and I hope that I can help a lot of other young women get there,” she also told People StyleWatch. “I think that a big part of that is showing that you can dress and wear your hair however you want. People will say whatever they have to say, but as long as you feel good and you feel confident and you’re taking those steps to feel comfortable with yourself, then you’re good!”
