Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Split: From Wedded Bliss to Divorce in Two Years
It comes as a shock to many — though not all — that Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. According to TMZ, their differences stemmed from their parenting styles, with a source saying Jolie became “extremely upset with his methods.” Their separation day was listed as last Thursday.
It’s been about two months since they were photographed together. They were at a Jamba Juice in Los Angeles on July 10 with their daughter Shiloh. The photo agency, which sold the photo, noted they looked “like a young teenage couple, showing their love is stronger than ever.” What a difference two months make.
Their last official outing was the premiere of their film By the Sea at the AFI Fest in Hollywood on Nov. 5. They were all smiles and touchy-feely there, having completed the movie, which Jolie, 41, wrote, directed, and they co-starred in, about a crumbling marriage.
Brad and Angelina started working on that film on their honeymoon. It was right after their super secret, intimate, family-centric wedding, which was planned by their six children, and took place at their French estate in August 2014 — 10 years after their relationship began on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith when he was still married to Jennifer Aniston. (It’s worth noting they were legally married in California prior to the family ceremony. That’s also where she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”)
Jolie, who was married twice prior to Pitt, talked about the challenging material in the film and the timing of the project (immediately following their wedding), admitting to Vogue in October, “Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film.”
However, working together wasn’t easy. She called the process “personal” and “very emotional” in an interview with E! News, adding, “Even though none of their problems are our problems, we still have our fights. When his voices raises it affects me.”
Pitt, 52, agreed, saying that there was “no way you can’t get a little riled up” in that type of work environment. However, he felt confident with his wife at the helm of the project, telling V magazine, “It’s surprising how much I enjoy the direction of my wife. She’s decisive, incredibly intuitive, and might I say sexy at her post. I trust her with my life.”
The trust between them seemed apparent during a rare joint interview with Tom Brokaw for the Today show in October. In it, Jolie got candid talking about how Pitt helped her through her elective double mastectomy in 2013 and ovary removal a few years later.
“I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn’t something where I was going to feel less of a woman. Because my husband wasn’t going to let that happen,” said Jolie, who lost her mother (and aunt) to cancer, and didn’t want her children to go through the same thing.
Pitt said he was behind her decision all the way. “Whatever’s got to be done to keep the family together, and keep the family together as long as possible is going to be done.
Shortly after their wedding, Jolie said on the Today show that their relationship “did change” after their wedding. “We were fortunate enough to be in that unusual situation, we got married with our [six] children and they were part of the ceremony. It was all of us agreeing to be together and to just commit to this life together. Not because we had to … because we were absolutely sure we felt that much of a family.”
She also said she was trying to better herself for her husband — within limits.
“We have more moments where I say, ‘I’m going to be a better wife,'” she said. “‘I’m going to learn to cook.’ and [Brad] says, ‘Oh, honey, know what you’re good at.’ … But I do like, ‘No, no, no, I’m going to get this wife thing down.’ He knows my limitations and where I’m a good wife and a good mom.”
Over the last two months, which included their second wedding anniversary, since they were seen together in L.A., they spent a lot of time apart, according to People magazine. Pitt was working on Allied and War Machine while Jolie finished First They Killed My Father.
They were both photographed separately earlier this month. Brad was in Croatia, reportedly scouting property, while Jolie was in Jordan continuing her work as a UNHCR special envoy.
According to TMZ, Jolie is seeking physical custody of the couple’s six children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox. She is asking the judge to give Pitt visitation, not joint physical custody, which is interesting for a pair, who seemed on the same page when it came to parenting their homeschooled brood and have both said they were raising them as “citizens of the world.”
