Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez Split: What Went Wrong?

When Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez announced they were divorcing after two years of marriage, a few confidants close to the couple weren’t surprised.
As one source tells Yahoo Celebrity, the relationship “just ran its course.” Echoes a second insider, “[Halle and Olivier] eventually realized they were more different than they first thought.”
It seems as if the Oscar-winning actress, 49, and Martinez, 49, were plagued by divorce rumors shortly after they wed in July 2013. The couple met on set of the 2010 flick Dark Tide and they were practically inseparable in the months that followed.
However, our first insider adds that hectic work schedules led to strain in their relationship early on and didn’t ease up.
“Think about it, they met and fell in love on set when they could see each other and work together every day,” says the source. “Unfortunately, spending that kind of time together isn’t something you can get used to when you are in this business. It took its toll.”

In March 2014, just five months after Berry gave birth to their son Maceo, reports surfaced that she and Martinez were already “living separate lives.” The couple brushed off those whispers and continued to combat rumors there was trouble in paradise… even when Halle was spotted on numerous occasions without her engagement ring (and may have almost forgotten her second wedding anniversary).
After divorce rumors ramped up this past summer, the Extant actress claimed she was ringless simply because she lost her sparkler in Mexico back in January 2014 and didn’t see it as a priority to replace it. Sources told TMZ — who broke divorce news on Tuesday — at the time that the missing piece of jewelry had nothing to do with a split and that there was no discussion about divorce with an attorney.
Cut to two months later and that clearly isn’t the case. According to People, different priorities and clashing personalities doomed the pair.
“They have had many issues,” a source tells the magazine. “They both have fiery personalities and don’t like to compromise. Halle has threatened to file for divorce several times after arguments.”

Apparently their living situation was a main point of contention for the couple as well. Although Halle and Olivier planned on living together in Europe, her custody battle over her 7-year-old daughter, Nahla, with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry forced her and Olivier to relocate and raise their son in California.
“Olivier never loved living in L.A. full time. [He] just isn’t happy in L.A.,” People’s source claims. The magazine also alleges that Martinez grew unhappy with Halle’s busy work schedule.
“He complains he spends his days alone, or with friends,” note the first source. “He doesn’t understand why Halle wants to work so much and is still so focused on her career. Halle has instead been extremely busy and Olivier, who has not been working, is very bored in L.A.”
According to E! News, Berry and Martinez have been estranged for months.
“They have struggled for a long time and had been living separate lives,” E!’s source claims. “They waited it out for a while, seeing if things would improve, but they didn't… They’ve essentially been separated for several months, but now they are both ready for a clean break and to move on with their lives.”
If that’s the case, then Halle and Olivier have already moved “forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son,” as they pledged to do in their statement. They were spotted looking happy together with 2-year-old Maceo at a Halloween fair on Oct. 17.
Here’s hoping this divorce is more amicable than Berry’s past breakups.
