Love Is in the Air—in the Land of Exes

The friends with benefits trend is so 2015. Now it’s all about friendly exes, or so it seems. Over the weekend a gaggle of former celebrity couples — some of whom have famously feuded since parting ways — made nice with each other. For the most part, it was kids and kid-related activities that reunited the exes, but it seemed they weren’t just tolerating one another’s presence, and were actually (dare we say) enjoying their time together? One couple looked so cozy, in fact, we can’t help but wonder if this is just the tip of a melting iceberg between them.

First up were Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, whose conscious uncoupling seemed to be going rather well. The Goop founder took to Instagram to post a sweet shot in honor of their daughter’s 12th birthday, though their daughter wasn’t in the pic. Instead, Paltrow and Martin mug for the camera tucked away under some large rocks.

“When your parents can’t handle #thundermountain anymore so they wait for you at the bottom,” she captioned the pic. “Disneyland #thehappiestplaceonearth #birthdayweekend.” (In addition to a trip to Disneyland, Apple also celebrated with a girls’ brunch alongside one of her besties, Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy.)

Next came Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline, who reunited to watch their two sons, Jayden and Sean, play a weekend soccer game. And while neither of the parents came solo (Britney’s dad Jamie joined her as did Kevin’s current wife, Victoria Prince), the singer and her former back-up dancer took time out to catch up one-on-one. As they chatted, the pop star had a huge smile on her face and things looked quite cordial—no word on whether their sons’ team won or not, though.

Perhaps the most shocking, however, were Eddie Cibrian, his current wife LeAnn Rimes, and his ex-wife Brandi Glanville who attended their son Jake’s soccer game together… and did not kill each other. The three have had a rather tempestuous relationship over the years (to put it mildly) and Glanville recently began filming a TV cooking show with Rimes’ ex-husband, Dean Sheremet, so the fact that this outing did not end in a bloodbath is nothing short of a miracle. Bravo, you three.

Finally, Hilary Duff and her ex-husband Mike Comrie reunited with their son for a “family” outing in Beverly Hills on Sunday. The exes officially divorced in February, but have remained on friendly terms — very friendly terms. In fact, when Duff was in her car and about to leave, Comrie leaned in through the window to give her a goodbye kiss and she certainly didn’t seem to mind. It remains to be seen whether they are back on or not, but it’s hard to imagine that this was just a friendly gesture. With all of these exes getting along so well, it seems that summer love is just around the corner… maybe, anyway.
