Melania Wears Stilettos on the Way to Texas
After Hurricane Harvey devastated the Gulf Coast, leaving as many as 10 dead and stranding residents in floodwaters, President Trump is set to visit Texas to check on disaster relief. But as he and the first lady left for Texas, it was Melania’s outfit that got the attention online.
President Trump is visiting Texas to receive briefings on the relief efforts in Corpus Christi, and later meet with state officials at the emergency operations center in Austin. (Houston, the city that was one of the hardest hit, was deemed too risky at this point.) Trump is going to check on how the federal government is helping the recovery effort, and brought along Melania as well as other White House officials.
As photos emerged of the president and first lady departing the White House and walking to Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base Tuesday morning, many people took notice of Melania’s attire, which included a bomber jacket and a pair of stiletto heels.
Though that’s pretty normal for the first lady, some critics took issue with the glamorous shoes while heading for the area of a natural disaster.
But according to CNN reporter Kate Bennett, Melania’s communications director shut down the controversy with the following statement: "It's sad that we have an active and ongoing natural disaster in Texas, and people are worried about her shoes."
And she ended up changing into more sensible white sneakers after landing in Texas, according to CNN's Hunter Schwartz. She also put on a baseball cap with the word "FLOTUS" on it, in true Trump style, while her husband wore one that read "USA."
