Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, of course. The franchise has continued into this decade with new movies like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which was released earlier this year. Turning into a pop culture phenomenon, the proton-pack-wearing team of professors suit up to battle paranormal ghosts that are wreaking havoc on New York City.

The visual effects might not be as impressive as today’s iterations, but the original cast and their chemistry, the humor combined with action, and intriguing storylines remain unmatched. Relive the fun with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis as Peter, Ray, and Egon, along with Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, and Ernie Hudson. • Stars: Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Dianne Wiest

  • Directed by: Joel Schumacher

Featuring a who’s who of young male actors from the ’80s, The Lost Boys is another iconic movie that defined a generation and has since become a cult classic. When teenage boys Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move with their mother to a small town in California, they discover that the town is a haven for vampires. They meet with vampire hunters who warn them of the threat of the undead, and a battle begins between seemingly good and evil. It becomes especially dangerous when Michael is at risk of transforming. If they can kill the head vampire, Michael might be saved.

With a wonderful cast that also includes Dianne Wiest, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, and Jami Gertz, The Lost Boys fits right up there with movies like The Goonies and Stand By Me that have high re-watch value. One part non-traditional coming-of-age story and one part allusion to Peter Pan, building on the idea of boys who are never able to grow up, The Lost Boys offers humor, horror, and famous faces you recall from your youth. In this road comedy- drama, he is Charlie Babbitt, a selfish young man who learns that his wealthy and estranged father has passed and left everything to his other son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), an autistic savant. Not even aware that he had a half-brother, Charlie visits Raymond and tries to squeeze at least half the estate from him.

  • Stars: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig

  • Directed by: Patty Jenkins

Want to have a superhero movie marathon? Check out Wonder Woman 1984 as a follow-up to Wonder Woman. Also directed by Patty Jenkins, this movie, the ninth in the DCEU, takes place in 1984 when Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is working at the Smithsonian Institution while also secretly fulfilling her duties as Wonder Woman. When she and a shy co-worker named Barbara (SNL cast member Kristen Wiig) notice an inscription on an artifact that can supposedly grant the holder one wish, Barbara uses it and becomes as strong, sexy, and cool as Diana. But, as it turns out, the Dreamstone was created by the God of Lies and not all is what it seems. Plus, there’s a greedy businessman named Maxwell “Max Lord” Lorenzano (Pedro Pascal) who wants to get his hands on it to gain tremendous power.

Like or it hate it, Wonder Woman is a fun, action-packed movie that has a slightly campy feel to it, but that’s OK. Our reviewer admits that the movie is a tad too long, but loves the moments of spectacle as Diana is in full control of her powers, and isn’t afraid to use them.

Point Break (1991)

Point Break
Point Break
  • Duration: 122m

  • Genre: Action, Thriller, Crime

  • Stars: Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey

  • Directed by: Kathryn Bigelow

Since Keanu Reeves is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to the latest John Wick movie, it’s the perfect time to look back at some of Reeves’ earlier action movies. In the early ‘90s, the now bona fide action hero starred in Point Break, a crime action movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

The movie, which also stars the late Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey, is about Johnny (Reeves), a former quarterback and rookie FBI agent who helps a more experienced agent Angelo (Busey) investigate a series of bank robberies by a group who wear rubber masks of former presidents. The suspicion is that the criminals are surfers, so Johnny is sent to go undercover in the community. It’s a role that was tailor-made for Reeves and marked a perfect transition from his more comedic roles (think the Bill & Ted movies) to the action films for which he later became known.

  • Genre: Horror

  • Stars: Marilyn Burns, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain

  • Directed by: Tobe Hooper

As classic a slasher horror film as you’ll ever find, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is must-see viewing for any fan of the genre. There are no flashy special effects, nor gratuitously gruesome scenes. But it is a terrifying movie about a group of friends who become victims of a family of cannibals and a sick killer known as Leatherface.

The first blockbuster slasher film to use power tools as a central weapon, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered one of the most influential horror films ever made. What makes it even more impressive is that the movie was made on a relatively small budget with a core cast of mostly unknown actors.
