The Boy And The Heron (2023)

Nearly a year after debuting in theaters, The Boy and the Heron finally made its way to home video in June 2024 and allowed just about everyone to dive into the latest and magnificent Hayao Miyazaki film. Like a lot of the older and more iconic Studio Ghibli films, this star-studded animated movie is full of painstakingly drawn animation, a fulfilling and poignant story, and incredibly relatable characters.

The movie says a lot about grief and loss, but it also has a rather uplifting message, one that isn’t lost on younger audiences, even if they are distracted by the eye-popping visuals. We’re not sure yet how it ranks with My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away, but it’s one of Miyazaki’s best in years.
