Abbott Elementary has won over the hearts of many.

The ABC mockumentary was created, co-written and executive produced by star Quinta Brunson. Since the show’s premiere in December 2021, Brunson’s creation has seemingly revived the network sitcom.

Abbott Elementary follows the lives of a group of teachers, a questionable principal and other school staff — including a mysterious janitor — in a Philadelphia public school. The one thing they have in common? They all remain dedicated to helping their students with an overwhelming lack of resources.

Throughout the course of the show’s first three seasons, viewers have gotten a chance to witness the shenanigans, life lessons and sometimes romantic moments between the ensemble cast.

Abbott Elementary, which has won four Emmys, will return for season 4 on Oct. 9, with this season promising a secret crossover Brunson says will “change television as we know it.”

From workplace sitcoms and mockumentaries to heartwarming comedies, here are 12 shows to watch while you wait for the next season of Abbott Elementary.

Parks and Recreation

If mockumentary style comedies following workplace shenanigans and connections are up your alley, Parks and Recreation brings the same lighthearted content to the screen.

Amy Poehler stars as do-gooder Leslie Knope, a government worker who just wants to make her Indiana town of Pawnee better, just as Brunson’s character Janine Teagues wants to improve Willard R. Abbott Elementary School for all of her students.

Leslie is determined to succeed — all with a smile on her face — with or without the support of her friends and colleagues (but preferably with).

Like Abbott Elementary, NBC’s Superstore brings a workplace comedy to the small screen. The sitcom follows the professional and personal lives of employees at the fictional megastore, Cloud 9. The series captures the sometimes mundane, but often zany moments of the store’s employees, including the highs and lows of their ever-evolving (and sometimes intertwining) lives.

A.P. Bio

While Abbott Elementary brings a more wholesome vibe to the school-based sitcom, A.P. Bio takes a more cynical approach. The series follows Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton), a disgraced former professor of philosophy at Harvard, who returns to his hometown Toledo, Ohio, after losing his dream job to his rival. Rather than teach advanced placement biology to his high school students, he seeks revenge, particularly on his rival.

Like Abbott Elementary, NBC’s The Office combines the mockumentary with a workplace comedy that had viewers laughing (and sometimes crying) every week. The fan-favorite series has Steve Carell at the helm as good-intentioned Michael Scott, the regional manager of the Scranton branch of the fictional paper company, Dunder Mifflin. Throughout the show’s nine seasons, fans get to watch life unfold between the cast of characters, including unlikely friendships, romance and children with some contained chaos in between.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

When thinking about workplace comedies, The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a groundbreaking sitcom that helped popularize the subgenre. The series follows Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore) as she moves to Minneapolis following the end of her engagement. After landing a gig as the associate producer for the evening news at WJM-TV, she is faced with the everyday challenges of a workplace, including a grumpy yet lovable boss, pompous anchorman and wise-cracking writer.

Much like Abbott Elementary, Single Parents brought both heart and humor to the sitcom. The short-lived comedy follows a group of single parents who are just trying to do the best for their kids. Scrubs is another sitcom hit that scratches the workplace comedy itch. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good sitcom like Abbott Elementary, Kim’s Convenience can fill that gap. The family-oriented comedy follows a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in Toronto. At the store, the family deals with a wide array of customers, all while navigating the sometimes tense relationships within the family.

Looking for more heartwarming (and sometimes misguided) optimism laced with some hard-learned life lessons? Ted Lasso delivers. Against all odds and his own struggles, Jason Sudeikis’ character Ted Lasso provides the same level of hope and heart as Janine. Ted Lasso follows Ted, a former American football coach, as he moves across the pond to coach a premiere league soccer team with no experience following a massive life change. Though he lacks experience with the sport, he manages to turn a down-trodden team into a group of winners both on and off the pitch.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is another small screen addition for fans of a workplace comedy. The series follows Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a carefree detective who has to change his ways when a new commanding officer, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) comes to the precinct. Much like Abbott Elementary, a will-they-won't-they romance occurs between Jake and his competition at the precinct, Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), amid endless hijinks at the station.

Party Down

Like Abbott Elementary, Party Down follows a group of co-workers who work for the same Los Angeles based catering company. The group — including Henry Pollard (Adam Scott), Constance Carmell (Jane Lynch) and Lydia Dunfree (Megan Mullally) – consists of current and former actors, writers and others who are waiting for their big break in Hollywood. The 2023 revival of the Starz comedy even featured Brunson in a guest spot.

It wouldn't be a Tina Fey comedy without a little shenanigans. Rather than following a group of teachers at an elementary school, 30 Rock follows the staff and stars of a live sketch-comedy show in New York City as Liz Lemon (Fey) tries to juggle her dreams with the complications of being a head writer amid a storm of chaos at the network. The hilarious ensemble includes Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowksi, Alec Baldwin and more.
