12-Year-Old Gets Sassy at the Scripps National Spelling Bee
This year’s annual Scripps National Spelling Bee was notable for a few reasons. It was the 90th time the bee has been held, and it featured the youngest contestant ever, 6-year-old Edith Fuller.
And 12-year-old Erin Howard made the bee even more notable, by adding an extra dash of sass to her turn. When she went up to the microphone to receive her word, Howard told the judge, “OK, you really have to give me a word I know right now.” He assured her that he was trying, but when she was given the word apparentement, she responded, “I’m sorry, did you misunderstand my request?”
In the end, the 12-year-old, piano-playing Hamilton lover pulled it out and spelled the word correctly, making everyone cheer.
