Maybe it’s just that it came so soon after the MTV Video Music Awards, but this year’s Emmy Awards red carpet felt surprisingly toned down. The best looks at the 2024 Emmys didn’t scream “Look at me!” so much as gently murmur, “Haven’t you noticed how chic I am?” in an elegant sort of stage whisper.
After years of over-the-top red-carpet fashion moments, this more pared-back approach felt like a sea change. Our favorite moments at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards all involved stars who, despite the new emphasis on quieter glamour, still brought their own personalities to their fashion choices—like Greta Lee in an angelic white Loewe gown, or Ayo Edebiri in a custom Bottega dress with a leg slit. Read on to see them all.
Greta Lee
Lee loves a slightly quirky red-carpet look, and she’s a dedicated wearer of Loewe, so it was no surprise to see her in this ethereal white dress from the brand.
Kristin Scott Thomas
Not everyone could pull off this lilac color, but it’s perfect on her—especially paired with pastel opera gloves.
Naomi Watts
Watts looked right out of Old Hollywood in this emerald dress from Balenciaga (a brand that has very much embraced new Hollywood).
Eiza González
If you ask Siri to show you a picture of va va voom, she’ll turn up this look from Tamara Ralph couture.
Saoirse Ronan
Two-piece dresses with exposed midriffs seem to be a trend on this year’s red carpet, but only Nicolas Ghesquière could create a version as sophisticated as this custom Louis Vuitton number.
Dakota Fanning
Without the pearl overlay, this Armani column gown would still be very pretty, but the pearls take it to the next level.
Selena Gomez
She was completely timeless in this Ralph Lauren dress with a glittery halter neckline.
Maya Erskine
It's hard enough to get dressed for work when you’re a nursing mother, let alone for the Emmys. Erskine gave birth to her second child this summer and joked around about breast milk on the red carpet, but she still looked pulled together and peaceful in this Rodarte dress.
Sarah Paulson
Paulson always brings an arty edge to her red-carpet appearances, and this custom Prada look in cobalt and graphic black and white fit her playbook perfectly.
Jennifer Aniston
The only thing sparklier than her Oscar de la Renta gown? Her many Tiffany diamonds.
Ayo Edebiri
She ramped up the glamour in custom Bottega Veneta and a megawatt smile.
Brie Larson
There’s something so sweet and wholesome about this custom Chanel dress.
Hannah Einbinder
This rose-colored Louis Vuitton gown instantly erased the memory of every bad fashion choice her frazzled Hacks character has ever made.
Meryl Streep
In her pink McQueen suit with a pussy-bow blouse, Meryl Streep was definitely having more fun than anyone.
Maya Rudolph
Rudolph's SNL bit acknowledging the show's 50th anniversary was a highlight (we could listen to her say ROBBED all day) and so was this mauve ruffled look by designer of the moment, Chemena Kamali's Chloé.
