Pixar's latest animated gem, Turning Red, is like a fizzing explosion of adolescence that erupts when you add the Mentos of puberty to the Diet Coke of parental control.
The film can be seen as a spiritual successor to the 2015 animated film Inside Out that told the tale of a 12-year-old girl's juddering journey through preadolescence, and the movie ends as she is on the cusp of puberty. Turning Red kind of picks up from where Inside Out left.
Turning Red tells the story of Meilin Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl who wakes up one day to discover that she has turned into a large red panda thanks to an ancient spell that affects only the female members of her family.
She also discovers that this transformation is triggered by intense emotions (feeling super-excited or embarrassed), and she can revert to her normal state if she suppresses her emotions (quite a difficult thing to do). Mei's transformation is also a metaphor for the onset of puberty, that triggers (guess what?) intense emotions!
Accompanying Mei on her sanguineous transformations are her close chums: Miriam, Priya, and Abby. Miriam is cool as a mint, Priya is the nerdy romantic, and Abby is raw energy.
