2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Comedy Actor: Jeremy Allen White (‘The Bear’) will roar

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Comedy Actor at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go to Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”). The other potential nominees, per our racetrack odds, are Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Theo James (“The Gentlemen”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, a leading 14 out of our 15 Emmy Experts predict a victory for White for “The Bear”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). He plays Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, the new owner of a Chicago beef restaurant following the tragic suicide of his brother. Amazingly, White has yet to lose at any televised awards show for FX’s cooking dramedy, having triumphed at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards.

The remaining Emmyologist — Jazz Tangcay (Variety) — instead believes Short will prevail for “Only Murders in the Building.” His character of theater director-turned-amateur sleuth Oliver Putnam engaged in a romantic relationship in Season 3 with Meryl Streep‘s theater actress Loretta Durkin, allowing viewers to see him in a new light. Short is already a two-time Emmy winner for “SCTV Network” (writing, 1983) and “AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks” (hosting, 2014).

Also looking strong in our pundits’ rankings is David for “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Throughout his career, he has amassed 29 Emmy nominations, winning twice for producing and writing “Seinfeld” (1993). In the final season of HBO’s “Curb,” David falls into some legal trouble in Atlanta when he gives a woman water while waiting in line to vote; it leads to a hilarious re-do of the “Seinfeld” series finale from 26 years earlier.

Fourth place in our Experts’ rankings is Martin for “Only Murders in the Building.” He plays Charles Haden Savage on Hulu’s whodunnit series, a former TV actor who’s now splitting his time between starring on a Broadway play and solving a murder. Martin won an Emmy Award for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” (writing, 1969) but, much like Short, he’s never prevailed for his acting.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Comedy Actor category include White in 2023, Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) in 2022 and ’21, Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) in 2020, Bill Hader (“Barry”) in 2019 and ’18, and Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) in 2017. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
