Of note about the Gotham Awards is the eligibility rules. According to the group’s website, the film submission form for consideration needed to be submitted by this year’s deadline of September 19. Moreover, “the film must be made accessible by password-protected viewing link or hosted ‘virtual screening room’ for screening by the nominating committees no later than the close of the submission period.”
Another wrinkle: According to the Gothams eligibility rules, films considered for Best Feature “must be directed, and/or produced (credited ‘producer’ or ‘produced by’), and/or written by individuals who are U.S. citizens or permanently U.S.-based. A minimum of two different individuals across these roles are required. If the film’s director is American as defined and fulfills at least two of these roles, this is sufficient for eligibility.” This is why movies like Netflix’s Best Picture contender “Emilia Perez” and Netflix’s Angelina Jolie vehicle “Maria,” directed respectively by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard and Chilean director Pablo Larrain, were not eligible in the Best Feature race (but were eligible in the Best International Feature category). In the end, neither film received a single nomination from the Gotham Awards.
The Gotham Awards take place on Monday, December 2 in New York.
