'24' prequel series planned at Fox
Anyone wonder how Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer ended up so grizzled and grumpy in 24?
Well, wonder no more, because a prequel series which will trace the anti-terrorism agent’s origin story could be on the way.
Bosses at Fox have revealed that Howard Gordon, Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran, the showrunner and co-creators of the hit show, are working on a new iteration of the action-drama, according to Deadline.
Fox TV group CEO Dana Walden did not give details, but said that ‘we are very excited about where the show would go’.
Sutherland, who’s now 51, has previously intimated that he’s no desire to return to the physically demanding role, which would leave a prequel project able to re-cast a younger actor.
He played Bauer, the maverick Counter Terrorism Unit agent, for eight seasons, the first arriving in 2001, and with each 24-episode series being based over a single day.
The final series, 24: Live Another Day, arrived in 2014 and was delivered in just 12 episodes instead, while a TV movie 24: Redemption, was aired in 2008.
By the time it reached its eighth season, it had become the longest-running TV espionage show of all time, besting the likes of Mission: Impossible and The Avengers.
