3 Body Problem Renewed at Netflix — EPs Promise ‘Epic Conclusion’ to Sci-Fi Saga
Netflix is going to continue being 3 Body Problematic for a little while longer.
The streamer has renewed the sci-fi drama for an undetermined number of “all new episodes,” TVLine has learned. The news came out of Netflix’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City Wednesday.

Though the streamer stopped short of calling the new episodes “Season 2” and later added that the number of forthcoming seasons and episodes “will be revealed at a later date,” a statement from series co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo — all of whom will be back for the next installment — sure sounds like things are wrapping up.
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us,” they said. “Here we go!”
The co-creators later clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that 3 Body Problem will be returning for multiple seasons on Netflix, with Weiss saying: “We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end.” Benioff noted: “We’re now at a place where we get to tell the rest of the story, and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to, and that’s immensely gratifying.”
Added Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, vice president, scripted series (U.S. and Canada), “The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End. Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership — and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.”

The series is based on author Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past novel trilogy. In the series, a group of Oxford alumni and a casualty of China’s Cultural Revolution play integral parts in an alien race’s plot to take over Earth. The first step involves ensnaring cutting-edge scientists by involving them in a hyperrealistic video game that asks them to solve one of mathematics/astronomy’s oldest conundrums. Death’s End, to which Friedlander makes reference, is the final book in the trilogy.
3 Body Problem‘s cast includes Jovan Adepo, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Benedict Wong, John Bradley, Jess Hong, Alex Sharp, Zine Tseng, Eiza González, Marlo Kelly and Jonathan Pryce.
Season 1 ended with a failed attempt to interact with the invading aliens — called the San-Ti — and the United Nations’ decree that Adepo’s Saul is now a “wallfacer” tasked with figuring out a way to defeat the San-Ti… whether or not he wants to. (Read a full recap.)
