‘American Idol’ Announces Final Winner

On Thursday, American Idol ended its 15-season run by announcing its final winner. The final two contestants were La’Porsha Renae and Trent Harmon, both hailing from Mississippi. Before Ryan Seacrest announced the winner, many contestants from previous seasons sang. Jennifer Lopez even debuted her new single, “Ain’t Your Mama.” Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood sang a duet of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks’s “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”

The biggest moment came as Ryan Seacrest revealed the winner: Trent Harmon. Harmon, the usually reserved and respectful singer, fell to the floor, then clutched his fellow contestant. The two had a short inaudible conversation. With tears streaming down his face, he said, “I worked so hard, and I know that I have a God-given ability. And I didn’t want to take it for granted. I wanted to work so, so hard, and she pushed me to do it.” He embraced La’Porsha and then sang for the last time on the American Idol stage.
