5 film festivals to check out in Milwaukee in fall 2024
Fall is when the film festivals come out in Milwaukee — this year, including a new one focusing on documentaries.
Here's what you need to know about the diverse film events coming to screens near you this season.
Milwaukee International Short Film Festival
When: Sept. 7-8
Where: Avalon Theater
What you'll be watching: Fifty-five short films shown in five separate programs, including the Voices Heard program featuring work by Milwaukee filmmakers of color. Ninety percent of the movies are by Wisconsin filmmakers. Also in the festival: a poetry slam, an in-person filmmaker panel, awards and an after-party.

Dialogues Documentary Festival
When: Sept. 26-29
Where: Oriental and Downer theaters
What you'll be watching: Milwaukee Film's inaugural Dialogues Documentary Festival has 30 movies and five programs of documentary shorts.
How much: Tickets are $15, $13 for Milwaukee Film members; at the theater box offices and online at mkefilm.org/ddf. Six- and 10-packs of tickets are available at $80 and $115 respectively ($15 off of each for Milwaukee Film members).

Milwaukee Film's Hispanic Heritage Month program
When: Oct. 4-14
Where: Oriental Theatre
What you'll be watching: For Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), Milwaukee Film has a quartet of offerings, including the eighth annual Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase (Oct. 5).

Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival
When: Oct. 17-20
Where: Oriental Theatre
What you'll be watching: This year's lineup hasn't been announced, but the festival sponsored by the Milwaukee Muslim Women's Coalition typically features movies in a variety of genres reflecting Muslim life around the world.

Milwaukee Jewish Film Festival
When: Oct. 27-31
Where: Marcus Theatres' North Shore Cinema
What you'll be watching: Presented by the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, the 27th annual Milwaukee Jewish Film Festival is showing five movies exploring the global Jewish experience.
How much: $12 (movies also will be available for streaming at home Nov. 4-10, for $18 per movie per household)
