5 Memorable TV Dream Sequences in Honor of World Sleep Day
This year marks the 10th annual celebration of World Sleep Day. Observed in more than 70 countries around the world, this event highlights the importance of sleep. Something we gladly support!
According to the official website, the event “aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.” To us at Yahoo TV, sleeping means sweet dreams. So in honor of World Sleep Day, here is a look at five memorable dream sequences from the small screen.
No list of dream sequences would be complete without Golden Girls’ “Questions and Answers” from Season 7. In the episode, Jeopardy! is looking for contestants in Miami. And while studying for her audition, Dorothy (Bea Arthur) nods off and dreams about being on the show. Much to her surprise, Rose (Betty White) is the returning champion and everything is going well until the Final Jeopardy! round. The most memorable line Dorothy says to the show’s creator, Merv Griffin: “You are bright, you are charming, you are the anti-Trump.”
Also making our list is “Josh Has No Idea Where I Am!” from Season 1 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) takes a sleeping pill on a flight to New York City and has a musical dream involving a dream ghost. The most memorable moment in the dream is when Amber Riley and Ricki Lake show up as the dream ghost’s backup singers.
The Sopranos used dreams often to help move the plot forward. And in Season 2’s “Fun House,” Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) has “fever dreams” brought on by food poisoning, which help him better understand some of his problems. In one of the dreams, Sal “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero (Vincent Pastore) reveals he is an FBI informant. The most memorable thing about this scene is that Big Pussy has taken the form of a dead fish and makes a humorous reference to “sleeping with the fishes.”
On M*A*S*H, in Season 8’s aptly titled “Dreams” episode, the surgeons perform 33 hours of surgery without sleep. They all try to get a little shut-eye in the midst of the crisis and find themselves having dreams that echo the nightmare of war. After this extremely long shift, Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda) falls asleep in the mess hall. In the most absurd moment of his dream, Pierce has to detach his own arms.
Twin Peaks’ Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) has a strange dream in Season 1’s “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer” that eventually helps him solve a murder mystery. One of the most talked-about things from this episode is the otherworldly way people speak in his dream. To create this effect, the actors recited their lines and acted out the scenes backward. The footage was then played backward, so the audience could understand what they were saying — but it had that iconic eerie sound.
