5 things to do in Bloomington: 'Top Gun,' pottery-making and Patsy Cline
From Tom Cruise to Patsy Cline, Bloomington has plenty of star-studded events to enjoy this weekend. Watch a movie, try your hand at pottery or make a zine to fully appreciate the variety of Bloomington happenings.
Here's everything you need to know about staying entertained this weekend.
'Top Gun' lands at Monroe County Airport
In 1986, Tom Cruise was the coolest jet fighter pilot to hit the big screen as Maverick in the top grossing film of the year, "Top Gun." Take off with Maverick, Goose and Hollywood on Friday, this time at the Monroe County Airport, during a showing of "Top Gun," sponsored by Monroe County Parks and Recreation.
Cardinal Spirits will be there selling popcorn, burgers and walking tacos, as well as canned cocktails and beer and wine for those 21 and older. The movie begins at dusk with activities starting at 7:30 p.m.
Be sure to bring a lawn chair to fully enjoy this free event. The airport is located at 972 S. Kirby Road, just west of the fairgrounds and Karst Farm Park.
Learn a new skill at the Pottery House
Throwing pottery is an artform. One false move and your carefully molded clay can become a misshapen lump. Learn to spin the wheel and create with confidence Fridays and Saturdays at The Pottery House Studio, 223 S. Pete Ellis Drive, by signing up for 1.5 hours of instruction and walking away with your first piece of pottery. Sessions are 7 p.m. Fridays and 1 or 3:30 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 31. This all-ages event is $50, which includes the cost of materials. Sign up at https://www.potteryhousestudio.com/
Go 'Crazy' for Katie's version of Patsy
Award-winning country music artist Katie Deal will pay tribute to Patsy Cline at 7 p.m. Friday at the Buskirk-Chumley. The Georgia native and her live band will perform Cline classics such as "I Fall to Pieces" and "Walkin' After Midnight."
Tickets range from $29 to $49 depending on the seat purchased. More information and tickets can be found at buskirkchumley.org and katiedeal.com. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Get crafty at International Zine Library Day
Not much else to do on a Sunday afternoon? Stop by the Monroe County Library downtown for a day of making zines. The all-ages, free event runs from noon-4 p.m. and includes hands-on workshops, zine creation, and collaboration with other zine makers.
Watch Shane Torres at the Comedy Attic
Guarantee a night of laughter with standup at the Comedy Attic. Comedian Shane Torres, a Texas native who has appeared on Conan and Comedy Central, will perform four shows across July 19 and 20. Each night will have 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. shows.
Tickets are $20 or $16 for students. They can be purchased at comedyattic.com. The Comedy Attic also has a minimum purchase policy, meaning attendees must buy two food or drink items to avoid a charge equal to the two least expensive menu items.
