The 6 Best Couples From ‘The Vampire Diaries’ That Will Have You Falling Fangs Over Feet
Travel back to Mystic Falls, Virginia, with us. But this time, instead of learning about Gemini covens, vampires, witches and werewolves, we’re going to dive deep into the love triangles and couples that turned the show from fantasy to flirty. Keep reading to learn our favorite six The Vampire Diaries couples.
6. Caroline and Matt
Caroline Forbes (Candice King) and Matt Donovan (Matt Roerig) started dating at the beginning of the show and stayed together for quite a while, actually. And while they were kind of cute, as Caroline’s character began to develop their chemistry and connection started to fizzle out. The two remained close friends until the end of the school year, though, so that earned them bonus points.
5. Caroline and Tyler
Another couple that featured Caroline. In this case, Caroline, the vampire, dates Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), who turns out to be a werewolf. And while it may seem like the perfect star-crossed lover's story, the couple's timing never seemed to match up. When Caroline was ready to date Tyler, he was either sired to Klaus (Joseph Morgan) or just emotionally unavailable, and when Tyler was ready to be with Caroline, she had already moved on. So, like we said, bad timing.
4. Elena and Stefan
Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Westly) might have been the couple that started it all, but there was always something missing from their relationship. The whole thing started with Stefan lying to Elena about his age, who he is and what he knew about her family. Then, Klaus turned Stefan back into a bloodthirsty vampire, causing a rift between him and Elena. When he finally got back from his ripper phase, Elena was then turned into a vampire, and Stefan really didn’t like that.
So, yeah, needless to say there was a lot of drama between those two!
And according to the actors, that translated off-screen as well.
“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show,” Doberve revealed back in 2019. “I respected Paul Wesley; I didn’t like Paul Wesley. I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be, like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?’ because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry. I realize now that there’s a fine line between love and hate and we despised each other so much that it read as love. We really just didn’t get along the first maybe five months of shooting.”
3. Bonnie and Enzo
Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and Enzo St. John (Michael Malarkey) were the couple no one saw coming, but when they collided, it was so sweet and swoon-worthy that we had no choice but to fall in love with them.
Sadly, though, the two of them never got their happy ending — no spoilers as to what happened, but let’s just say it crushed our hearts and killed their oh-too-short-lived romance.
2. Damon and Elena
Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) were the iconic enemies-to-lovers couple that had everyone swooning and screaming at the TV, begging for them just to get together already!
Somerhalder, however, didn’t feel the same way, revealing that “Delena [Damon and Elena] fans were actually problematic. To my family and me, and it just got really weird for a little while. I 'shipped Elena and Damon like crazy until the 'ship just got negative. So I love Stelena [Stefan and Elena]. It's easier for my life. And I got to see Paul all the time 'cause he and Elena were always making out and stuff.”
But just because he feels that way, doesn’t mean we do! Damon and Elena forever!
1. Caroline and Klaus
The fan-favorite couple that never was. Caroline and Klaus had some of the best chemistry on the show — everyone remembers when he told her, “He was your first love, but I intend to be your last” — but sadly, the two never had their time in the sun (probably a good thing, considering the whole vampires burning up in sunlight thing.) They were always just ships passing in the night, but even so, we had to rank them at number one because they truly were the best couple on the show.
