7 questions you’re probably asking about the shocking 'Handmaid’s Tale' season finale (spoilers!)
Warning: spoilers ahead.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 finale ended with one defiant twist and many unanswered questions. The episode culminated with June (Elisabeth Moss) being smuggled out of the Waterford house by a network of Marthas. The spurned Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) reluctantly let June and her daughter leave undetected. The final scene featured June giving up her baby to fellow handmaid Emily (Alexis Bledel) and walking away from a rescue, presumably to try to save her other daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake).
With that kind of an ending, here are the questions that will leave us talking until Season 3.
#7: Will Waterford suspect Nick?
Nick (Max Minghella), with his hand on his gun, all but demanded that Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) remain in the house, delaying any search efforts. Once Waterford gets a sense of the escape plot, will he be suspicious of his trusted driver, who was also involved in June’s previous escape attempts?
#6: Is Aunt Lydia dead?
In the last image we saw of the overbearing Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), she was left bleeding on the floor after being stabbed and kicked down the stairs by Emily.
Did she survive the attack, and will she return to her position?
#5: Will the Marthas be blamed?
We’ve seen a Martha killed this season for much less than smuggling a commander’s child. With Rita (Amanda Brugel) and the other Marthas going so far as to start a fire as a diversion to help smuggle June and her baby out, will they be blamed?
#4: Will Serena betray June and the Marthas?
Serena Waterford hasn’t been the most trustworthy character to June. She’s gone from ally to one of the women around her to the mind behind punitive rape. She reluctantly let the Marthas and June smuggle Nicole out of Gilead, but will she betray them later on?
#3: Is Bradley Whitford in deep s***?
Bradley Whitford made an appearance in the last two episodes as Joseph Lawrence, a sympathetic resistance leader in Gilead. After uniting June and Emily in the plot to smuggle them out, he admitted, “I’m getting myself in deep s***.” Will we see his character again, and will he face the likely consequences of freeing Emily?
That leaves us with the two biggest questions of all.
#2: Are Emily and Nicole safe?
Will Emily and Nicole make it to good ol’ Canada, as June tried and failed to do in both seasons so far?
#1: Can June save her daughter?
Will June be able to brave Gilead, with only a red hood and a mother’s instincts, to find her daughter Hannah and rescue her?
All we know is that Season 3 cannot come soon enough.
