8 Things Sean Penn Was Doing Back When His New Girlfriend, Leila George, Was Still in Diapers

Suzy ByrneReporter

Sean Penn loves blonds — and his latest real-life leading lady, Leila George, fits the bill. But her hair color is not the most interesting detail about her. The aspiring actress, who’s the daughter of actor Vincent D’Onofrio, is also 32 years Penn’s junior. For perspective, George, 24, is one year younger than 56-year-old Penn’s daughter, Dylan.

That age gap got us thinking about what Penn, who has been a movie star for most of his life, was up to around the time George was born, in 1992. While she was still in diapers, he was…

1. Changing diapers himself. Dylan, his daughter with second wife Robin Wright, was born in 1991 and their son, Hopper, arrived in 1993.

2. Adjusting to his 30s. The Milk star’s 20s were all about drama. Divorce from Madonna. Spats with paparazzi. A 60-day jail sentence. In the early ‘90s, he started his family. So he was having babies when his current baby was born.

3. Dealing with very grown-up things. While George was having someone wipe drool from her chin, Penn was learning how to pick up the pieces after his Malibu mansion, which he shared with his young family, was burned to the ground in a 1993 California wildfire.

4. Playing an attorney. Back when George was sucking on a pacifier, Penn was transitioning into more mature roles. A decade earlier, he was known for playing stoner surfer Spicoli. In the early ‘90s, he starred opposite Al Pacino in Carlito’s Way, in which he played a lawyer — albeit a sleazy one.

5. Directing a Shania Twain video. It was nursery rhymes for George, but Penn was really into music in the early ’90s (thanks, Madonna?) and found himself directing a video for Twain’s “Dance With the One That Brought You.” Around the same time, he directed for Lyle Lovett andPeter Gabriel too.

6. Escorting his future wife to the Forrest Gump premiere. He was walking the red carpet with Wright, who played Jenny in the Tom Hanks film, while George was learning to walk.

7. Wearing leather vests. This speaks for itself. Oh, ’90s fashion.

8. Brooding. Oh, snap – he still does this one. He’s Sean Penn!

We wish that Penn and George, who made her acting debut alongside James Franco and Tori Spelling in the TV movie Mother, May I Sleep With Danger back in June, enjoy one another’s company for a long time to come. She’s certainly in good company with Madonna, Robin, Jewel, Charlize Theron, and Scarlett Johansson, to name a few.
