A Quick Primer on the ‘Where’s Waldo?’ Universe and What the Movie Might Entail
It was recently announced that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be producing a Where’s Waldo? movie. The first question most of us had was: “How?” As it turns out, there’s actually a fairly rich Waldo-verse. It was even adapted into a cartoon in the ’90s. We took a quick look at the world around Waldo to try to figure out what a film based on him would look like.
Waldo’s creator, author Martin Handford, said he’s “basically [a] well-meaning and likable,” “slightly nerdish” man on an endless worldwide hike. He’s a character we search for who’s searching for something himself. Boom — subtext. Waldo has a sidekick — a dog named Woof, who seems to have the same vision problems as his owner.
Then there’s Wenda, Waldo’s dear friend. The official site makes it seem like they’re strictly platonic. Maybe Rogen and Goldberg will have Waldo be romantically interested in someone who dresses exactly like him and his dog. Wizard Whitebeard is Waldo’s “magical mentor,” because, oh right, there’s magic involved. Waldo has an enemy — Odlaw. He’s supposedly obsessed with thwarting Waldo’s plans. Why? Because!
What kind of adventures does Waldo get into? So many. The first book was set in traditional vacation spots. As the series moved on, Waldo time-traveled, went on a hunt for magical scrolls through fantastical lands, and even took a spin appearing on different Hollywood movie sets. Considering that Rogen and Goldberg love sending up showbiz, I’d say there’s a great chance Waldo is going to have a Hollywood adventure.
