The first trailer for 'A Quiet Place Part II' is here to scare you silly on New Year's Day

Two years ago, John Krasinski’s modestly-budgeted monster movie, A Quiet Place, made some serious noise at the box office, grossing nearly $200 million in the U.S. alone. This March, Krasinski is bringing scary back with A Quiet Place Part II, which follows the members of the Abbott family — those that survived the first movie anyway — as they search for a new safe haven from the sound-hungry alien invaders that besieged their farm. The first trailer for the sequel premiered today and promises a big step forward into a larger story and a wider world. (Watch the trailer above.)

After flashing back to Day 1 of the alien invasion, the trailer then jumps ahead to the immediate aftermath of the previous movie, with Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) and her three children — Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe) and yet-to-be-named newborn — venturing away from the soundproofed path that marks the border of their territory. Leaving it means fresh dangers, not all of which are extraterrestrial in nature. Largely cut off from contact with other humans since the alien invasion, the family now finds themselves encountering fellow survivors, represented by new cast members Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou. And these two have their own agendas. Murphy, in particular, seems dead set on keeping the Abbotts from making contact with other pockets of humanity. “You don’t know, do you?” he tells Evelyn. “I do. The people that are left, are not the kind of people worth saving.”

One thing that hasn’t changed is the need for silence when the characters are out and about in the open wilderness. The first film was deservedly acclaimed for relying on visuals, rather than dialogue, to deliver exposition — and scares — and Krasinski appears to be sticking to that playbook for the second chapter. He’s also concocted fresh ways to torture his leading lady, and real-life wife, after subjecting her to an intense bathtub birth scene the first time around. “I think the hardest thing for me was to torture her like that — meaning having her go multiple takes,” Krasinski told Yahoo Entertainment in 2018. On the other hand, that “torture” did result in Blunt winning a SAG Award for her scarily committed performance, so it’s safe to say that she’s forgiven him.

Twitter isn’t keeping quiet about their anticipation level for A Quiet Place Part II, particularly since the trailer promises that Blunt will get another chance to show off the action chops that elevated Doug Liman’s 2014 sci-fi favorite Edge of Tomorrow.

If the finished feature lives up to the intensity of this trailer, get ready for A Quiet Place Part III in 2022.

A Quiet Place Part II opens in theaters on March 20.
