A SuperFan In Memoriam for 2016’s Cancelled TV Shows
We are gathered here today to pay our final respects to our fallen friends. They have been there for us in good times and in bad. And the cruel hand of fate has decided they will be there no more. So, let’s say fare thee well, cancelled TV shows, with this SuperFan TV: In Memoriam…
ABC stomped on our hearts when they told Nashville that there would be no encore. The Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere drama will take its final bow after Season Four.
And the #CancelCastle hashtaggers won a bittersweet victory as ABC did just that. After Stana Katic and Tamala Jones were dropped for a potential Season 9, fans of the Nathan Fillion dramedy raged on Twitter. ABC listened, and Castle writes his last mystery on May 16th.
Marvel’s Agent Carter and The Muppets were two more surprise cancellations on ABC. Agent Carter garnered high praise, but couldn’t match the ratings of its Marvel sister show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Muppets drew the ire of the One Million Moms advocacy group for its “sexually charged” humor. ABC must have been tired of defending the hand puppets’ dirty jokes and pulled the plug.
On CBS, CSI: Cyber will sign off after two seasons. After almost 800 episodes across four different shows, no more crime scenes will be investigated in Las Vegas, New York, Miami, or wherever Cyber took place.
The Good Wife also wrapped on CBS, but a spinoff is gaining momentum. Starring Christine Baranski, the untitled offspring may end up on CBS All Access, their on-demand streaming service, alongside a new Star Trek series.
The CW kept pretty much everything, except for the deadly virus drama Containment. The network also gained a new show dropped from CBS – Supergirl will soar to the CW to join her DC sidekicks – Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.
Over at Fox, the network decimated its new lineup, killing off Seth MacFarlane’s Bordertown, the John Stamos laugher Grandfathered, the Rob Lowe-Fred Savage buddy comedy Grinder, and two shows that were gone before anyone knew they had even premiered: Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life – good thing the guide wasn’t about surviving cancellation – and Second Chance, which changed titles from The Frankenstein Code. Apparently, neither title was good enough for a Season Two.
