Aaron Taylor-Johnson Explains His 23-Year Age Gap With His Wife & Labels the Criticism ‘Bizarre'
Building a life together when the world seems to be questioning the legitimacy of your relationship, is no small feat. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who reportedly is about to become the next James Bond, and his wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson, have done just that, but their 23-year age gap has often been the focus of public scrutiny.
Aaron and Sam’s love story began on the set of Nowhere Boy in 2009, where Sam was directing and Aaron starred as the young John Lennon. Their connection was undeniable, and despite the differences in their ages, they found in each other a kindred spirit. Their relationship blossomed into a partnership, and the public did not take kindly to the 18-year-old Aaron being romantically linked to Sam, who was 42 at the time. The power dynamics at play between a director and actor, along their 23-year age gap have made some people uncomfortable with their relationship, but Aaron still isn’t going to let anyone dictate the narrative for him and Sam.

“You’re doing something too quickly for someone else? I don’t understand that. What speed are you supposed to enjoy life at? It’s bizarre to me,” he added, expressing confusion over society’s expectations for how people should progress through life stages. The two welcomed two daughters, Wylda Rae and Romy Hero in July 2010 and January 2012, respectively, and Aaron has acted a a step-parent to Sam’s older daughters, Jessie and Angelica, from her previous marriage.
Aaron clearly holds deep admiration for Sam, describing her as a “great filmmaker and a wonderful storyteller.”He acknowledges the challenges that come with their public image, saying, “There’s a protectiveness that I feel. I think it’s really difficult. There’s also part of me that feels like if something didn’t work, I’m the one that’s responsible.”
This sense of responsibility, however, has not deterred him from celebrating their love and life together. Aaron openly shares his affection and admiration for Sam, especially on significant occasions such as her birthday. His heartfelt message on March 4 is a testament to their unbreakable bond: “Happy Birthday my darling @samtaylorjohnson ?? You’re an exceptional woman, there’s really no one I know quite like you. You are the most wonderful doting mother and beautiful role model to our 4 daughters. A gorgeous loving wife, you are my love, my soulmate and I’m always blown away by you. Your so cool. I couldn’t be more proud and excited for this year ahead for you ??,” he captioned a black and white photo of himself and Sam on Instagram.
