Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Wife Sam Says Attention on Their Marriage and Age Difference Makes Her 'Uncomfortable'

Sam Taylor-Johnson admits the scrutiny on her marriage to Aaron Taylor-Johnson makes her "uncomfortable."
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter recently about her upcoming film Back to Black, filmmaker Sam, 57, spoke to her relationship with Aaron, 33. The pair first met on the set of her 2009 feature directorial debut Nowhere Boy, a John Lennon biopic in which Aaron, then 18, played the famous Beatle.
“There are times where it’s uncomfortable,” Sam told the outlet of the attention her marriage receives, largely because of their age difference. “Most of the time we zone it out and stay pretty private. We tend to retreat. Kids and school runs keep you pretty grounded.”
Sam was first married to art dealer Jay Jopling and shares two daughters, now 26 and 17, with her ex-husband, whom she divorced in 2008 after 11 years of marriage. Aaron proposed to her in 2009, one year after the couple met while making Nowhere Boy.

"We were very professional through the entire film. ... But everyone on set knew," she recalled to Harper's Bazaar about the start of their relationship in 2019. "And as soon as we finished, he told me he was going to marry me. We had never been on a date, or even kissed."
Sam and Aaron tied the knot in a June 2012 ceremony in Somerset, England, after they welcomed their two daughters: Wylda Rae, now 13, and Romy Hero, now 12. The filmmaker described her daughters as “four very strong, opinionated young women,” while speaking with THR.

The couple are typically private about their relationship and life together. In March, Aaron — whose public profile has been raised lately by rumors that he may next lead the James Bond franchise — told Rolling Stone UK that he still never understood some of the fascination with their relationship.
“What you gotta realize is that what most people were doing in their twenties, I was doing when I was 13," he told the outlet. “You’re doing something too quickly for someone else? I don’t understand that. What speed are you supposed to enjoy life at? It’s bizarre to me."
Aaron accompanied Sam to the premiere of Back to Black, a biopic centered around the life of the late Amy Winehouse, on April 8. The Fall Guy actor also shared a tribute to his wife to celebrate her 57 birthday on Instagram on March 4.
"You’re an exceptional woman, there’s really no one I know quite like you. You are the most wonderful doting mother and beautiful role model to our 4 daughters," he wrote in a caption at the time. "A gorgeous loving wife, you are my love, my soulmate and I’m always blown away by you."
