Joshua Jackson and a team of talented heavy hitters set sail on the unique medical drama Doctor Odyssey. Ryan Murphy’s new series promises to deliver “Big Deck Energy” and some big name guest stars, with the action all taking place on a cruise ship.

The official ABC synopsis explains, “From the brilliant mind of Ryan Murphy comes high-octane procedural Doctor Odyssey. Max (Joshua Jackson) is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all-hands-on-deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

Joshua Jackson as Doctor Max Bankman
Joshua Jackson is best known for appearing in the Mighty Ducks film series and for playing Pacey Witter on Dawson’s Creek. He’s also starred in Fringe, The Affair, and Fatal Attraction. In Doctor Odyssey, Jackson stars as Doctor Max Bankman, the new on-board doctor of the Odyssey cruise ship. He told TV Insider, “He’s an East Coast, Ivy League do-good guy who graduated top of his class and went to do Doctors Without Borders. Then he spent weeks in isolation during COVID, on the razor’s edge of ‘Will he or won’t he make it?’ and after that decided, ‘You know what? I need to go and unplug from everything. I need to just start fresh.’ And that’s what he does.”
Don Johnson as Captain Robert Massey
Don Johnson has a long and impressive resume, with career highlights that include his legendary role as Det. Sonny Crockett on Miami Vice. He’s also starred in Nash Bridges, HBO’s Watchmen, and the film Knives Out. Johnson described his Doctor Odyssey character to TV Insider as “an amalgamation of men that I’ve known throughout my life in authority.” He continued, “The ones who are the most effective are the kindest. They know how to get people to follow you; they command respect and not demand it.”
Phillipa Soo as Nurse Avery Morgan
Phillipa Soo is best known for originating the role of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in the Broadway musical Hamilton and played the title role in the Broadway musical Amelie in 2017. She also originated the role of Natasha Rostova in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. Soo shared a bit about her Doctor Odyssey character with TV Insider, explaining, “Avery’s been working on this cruise line for a couple of years. She has the qualifications to be a doctor without being a doctor.”
In a behind-the-scenes video promoting the show, Soo remarked, “These characters live in a very high-stakes world. It’s a cruise line miles from shore, they have limited resources available to them — so they have to think quick, on their feet.”
Sean Teale as Nurse Tristan Silva
Sean Teale is known for his roles in Skins, The Gifted, Mr. Selfridge, and Reign. Teale told TV Insider that Tristan and Avery have “a great partnership.” He explained, “They complement each other well. Personally he has some conflicting, powerful feelings for her [and] Max’s arrival throws a real spanner in the works. Which for a competitive guy who’s used to being the life and soul, is fairly understandable. I mean have you seen Joshua Jackson?”
In the behind-the-scenes Doctor Odyssey video, Teale noted that the characters “have to adapt and rely on each other. He added, “And there’s a camaraderie between the three that they can pull together to solve issues that otherwise would have been dealt with very differently on land.”
Doctor Odyssey airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC and streams on Hulu.
