Adam Sandler confirms 'Happy Gilmore' sequel is in the works: 'We have a million ideas'
A "Happy Gilmore" sequel is in the works, Adam Sandler has confirmed.
Christopher McDonald revealed in March that Sandler, who starred in the original sports comedy as the titular character, is involved in the project.
McDonald played Happy's nemesis Shooter McGavin in the 1996 film. He revealed the project during an interview on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland.
"Here's a quick intel," McDonald told host Ken Carman. "I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he says to me 'McDonald. You're going to love this.' I said 'What?' And he says 'How about that?' and he shows me a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2."
The "Hacks" actor then joked that the radio producers should cut his comment out of the interview in case the project did not pan out.
"I don't want to be a liar," he said, "I said that would be awesome. It's in the works. Fans demand it."
During an appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show" on Wednesday, Sandler confirmed he told McDonald that "we're working on some stuff" for "Happy Gilmore 2" but asked him not to tell anybody.
"He texted me after the fact, 'By the way, that thing you told me not to talk about, I talked about,'" Sandler joked.
What is 'Happy Gilmore' about?
Adam Sandler plays as a professional hockey player named Happy Gilmore who develops a passion for golf. Happy decides to join a golf tournament and win enough money to buy his grandmother's (Frances Bay) home before she loses it.
During the tournament, he faces off against arrogant golfer Shooter McGavin, who is threatened by Happy.
"With his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, Happy becomes an unlikely golf hero -- much to the chagrin of the well-mannered golf professionals," the film's synopsis reads.
When will 'Happy Gilmore 2' come out?
There is no announced release date for "Happy Gilmore 2."
When asked about a potential timeline on the "Dan Patrick Show," Sandler did not provide specifics but said that he and Tim Herlihy, his co-writer on the original film, are "diligently trying to make a good reason" for the sequel. He also said that when he is done shooting a movie he is currently working on, he will call Herlihy so they can "get in the room" and resume work on the film. Sandler indicated the script is not yet done, however.
"We've been jamming and writing," he said. "We have a million ideas already. We've just got to make it a movie."
Deadline reported that the film will be for Netflix, where Sandler has a longtime deal, and the comedian told Patrick, "Netflix is excited about it." But a studio has yet to announce the project, and the streamer previously declined a USA TODAY request for comment.
