Aerosmith's train has stopped a-rollin'.

The band with strong South Shore ties announced in a social media post last week that its members made the "difficult, but necessary" decision to retire from touring because of 76-year-old frontman Steven Tyler's vocal cord injury, which postponed the tour in fall 2023.

The band this spring released rescheduled tour dates, which included a New Year's Eve show at TD Garden in Boston. The tour was scheduled to kick off in Pittsburgh in September and finish in Buffalo in February.

But Tyler's lingering injury has made the tour impossible, the band said.

"As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side," the band's statement read. "Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible."

The statement continued: "A final thank you to you ? the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Dream On. You’ve made our dreams come true."

Fans who bought concert tickets through Ticketmaster should have their purchases fully refunded. Those who bought on third-party sites should reach out to those merchants.

Aerosmith has strong South Shore connections

Aerosmith formed in Boston in 1970 and played its first concert at what is now called Miscoe Hill Middle School in Mendon.

They have collected several Grammys and other music awards, performed at the Super Bowl and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Tyler and his bandmates have all called the South Shore home. Guitarist Joe Perry sold his Duxbury mansion in 2022. At one point, Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer and guitarist Brad Whitford all lived in Marshfield. Bassist Tom Hamilton was the outlier, living in Boston and Cape Cod. Tyler and Perry even owned a music club, Mount Blue, in Norwell in 1997.

Tyler is still a part-time Marshfield resident. In 2011, he made a surprise appearance at Scituate Heritage Days, drawing thousands of fans to Scituate Harbor for his impromptu performance.
