Kathryn Hahn stars as Agatha Harkness, a neighborhood witch whom audiences first met on the Disney+ series WandaVision. In the spinoff, Agatha loses her powers after a teenager helps her break from a “distorted spell” and sets out to get them back, according to the series description.
Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Patti LuPone, Aubrey Plaza and Debra Jo Rupp are also in the cast.
“There’s a lot of twists and turns, a lot of mystery, a lot of reveals,” series creator Jac Shcaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter at the Agatha All Along premiere in Los Angeles on Monday. “There’s a lot of genre pastiche, allusions to familiar pop culture things. And the ways that it’s different [from WandaVision], it’s really spooky, it’s dark, our lead is not always nice. But even WandaVision, I’m always interested in kind of throwing away the binary of the good and evil. Everybody’s got a little bit inside of them — but let’s be honest, Agatha’s a little more evil than she is nice.”
The Hollywood premiere turned into a Parks & Recreation reunion for Hahn and Plaza, and Amy Poeheler and Adam Scott, both of whom attended the premiere. Hanh called working with Plaza “a dream” since they didn’t have scenes together on Parks & Rec. “We had never had any scenes together in Parks and Rec, I think we passed each other in hallways, but for this to be the first time we really worked together was incredible,” Hahn told THR. “I think she’s such an extraordinary actor so to be able to play with her like this was so fun.”
Schaeffer, Rachel Goldberg and Gandja Monteiro directed the series. Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos and Schaeffer are executive producers. Trevor Waterson is co-producer.
