As one of the most popular fantasy series of all time, there are hundreds of different editions of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, including plenty of collectible editions that are practically displayable art in and of themselves. With Lord of the Rings: the Rings of Power dropping on Prime Video on Aug. 29, it’s no surprise that another collector’s edition box set of LOTR is arriving in U.S. for the first time.

On Oct. 1 Target is releasing The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set, but the good news is that it’s available to preorder online right now. Priced at $84, each book comes with sumptuous cover designs, foil stamping, stained edges, and a ribbon bookmark. While there are many eye-catching editions of Tolkien’s work, even this box set stands out in particular — along with the three detailed books, you’ll also receive an exclusive fold-out map of Middle-earth.
This cover art was actually previously featured in U.K. editions of LOTR, but now stateside readers can add them to their own personal Tolkien libraries. Along with the three books, you can display your entire paperback set in a stylish slipcase on your shelf. While you’ll probably want all three volumes in the trilogy, each book in this set is releasing separately on Sept. 17 if you have a particular favorite. You can preorder the collector’s editions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King for just $35 each at Target.
While this LOTR set is a worthy collectible for an fan, there’s something truly special and timeless about another upcoming release. Although it’s certainly a more premium offering, The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Illustrated Box Set ($325.99) is receiving its widest release yet as an updated version of the stunning collection first released in 1992. The three-volume, deluxe slipcased hardback set is illustrated by acclaimed Tolkien artist, Alan Lee, who’s contributed to several editions of Tolkien books as well as Peter Jackson’s LOTR and Hobbit films adaptations.
This collection features exclusive new paintings and over 50 pencil drawings from Lee appearing for the very first time. All three books have redesigned covers with custom-built illustrated slipcases stamped in silver foil, and hardcover bindings made from cloth and leather. Along with three removable art cards, the box set comes with a pair of foldout maps of Middle-earth drawn by J.R.R.’s son, Christopher Tolkien — known for editing and turning his father’s writings into supplementary texts such as The Silmarillion (which has a new collector’s edition currently 30% off at Target).
Whether you’re springing for the illustrated edition, or the far more budget-friendly (but equally as gorgeous) collector’s edition set, you can currently preorder both at Target.com.
