Aidy Bryant books return engagement as Spirit Awards host
Here’s a prediction: Aidy Bryant will be wearing ruby red when she takes to the stage on Feb. 22 to host the Spirit Awards. Why’s that you ask? Because it will the 40th anniversary of these prizes bestowed by Film Independent and the ruby is the traditional gift for this landmark achievement.
Bryant emceed the most recent edition of these kudos, which saw “Past Lives” pick up a pair of prizes including Best Picture. “The Holdovers” won three (including for eventual Oscar champ Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and “American Fiction” took two (giving screenwriter Cord Jefferson a chance to practice his Oscar acceptance speech).

Bryant starred for 10 seasons on “SNL” and earned a pair of Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Since leaving the show in 2022, Bryant has been busy. She headlined her own Hulu comedy, “Shrill,” picking up another Emmy bid (this time for Best Comedy Actress). And she just signed for the sophomore season of the Apple TV+ hit laffer “Platonic” with Rose Byrne and Josh Rogen.
In making the announcement of her return engagement, Film Independent president Josh Welsh said, “We couldn’t ask for a better host for our 40th anniversary. As we prepare to celebrate this incredible milestone honoring the outstanding achievements and contributions within the independent world, we welcome Aidy back with open arms. After her unforgettable turn last year, we can once again anticipate an evening filled with laughter, inspiration, and recognition of excellence.”
Film Independent confirmed that the 2025 Spirit Awards nominations for the best in independent film and TV will be announced on December 4. This awardsfest takes place in the afternoon and streams on YouTube. While renowned for being laid-back, this ceremony serves as a major fundraiser for the nonprofit Film Independent and its year-round initiatives.
