Al Gore praises House Intel Committee and witnesses in impeachment proceedings

Following the third day of testimony in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, former Vice President Al Gore joined Late Night With Seth Meyers where he praised the way the House Intelligence Committee has been handling the hearings, while at the same time not holding back his thoughts on Trump.

"There is just a radical, all-out assault from Donald Trump on the values of America, the norms of America, the rule of law in America," Gore said, "so I'm impressed with the way the House Intelligence Committee is going about these hearings and I think it’s having an impact.”

Gore also praised the witnesses, most of whom have served the country in one way or another for decades under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

"People are seeing these incredibly honest, hard-working women and men who have been serving our country in foreign service and in other ways,” Gore said, “and I think that they're making a big impression."

Not everyone is praising the witnesses though. Trump posted a tweet critical of former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch while she was testifying, which some have said could lead to another article of impeachment.

The witnesses also have plenty of detractors on Fox News.

Gore had a front row seat to Bill Clinton's impeachment in 1998, but says there is one glaring difference between then and now.

"The partisanship is more extreme now.” Gore said. “There have of course been periods in our country's history where it was way more extreme than it is now. Anyway, but yes, it's very tribal now."

Gore then made it clear that he didn't mean to imply the extreme partisanship is equal on both sides of the aisle. Something Gore said some of his Republican friends agree with.

"Some of them agree with me that there is a group in the Republican Party that has made a decision to just follow Donald Trump no matter what he says, no matter what he does," Gore said. "If he attacks a Gold Star mother and father, that's fine with them or they'll not say anything about it not being fine. And I think that's something new. I think it's unhealthy."

Late Night With Seth Meyers airs weeknights at 12:35 a.m. on NBC.
