Al Pacino-starring 'The Humbling' picked up by Millenium Entertainment

Al Pacino is entering the Oscar race. Millennium Entertainment announced that it acquired the U.S. rights to Pacino-starring The Humbling, Barry Levinson’s Philip Roth adaptation, and will be releasing it this year and giving it an awards campaign.

The Humbling, which screened at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, finds Pacino playing an aging actor who has a relationship with a much younger lesbian woman (Greta Gerwig). Though reaction to the the film itself hasn’t been entirely positive, some critics have heralded Pacino’s work as a return to form. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair wrote that he “watched Al Pacino, that luminary often lost to caricature, do something fresh, invigorating, and exciting.” The New York Post‘s Lou Lumenick said the movie “turns out to be one of the best things the Oscar-winning actor has done this century.”

In addition to Pacino and Gerwig, The Humbling also features Dianne Wiest, Kyra Sedgwick, and Dan Hedaya in its cast.
