For years, British producer Alex Da Kid has been behind the scenes, working with the likes of Eminem, Imagine Dragons and more, and even starting his own label, KIDinaKORNER back in 2011. Now, he appears ready to focus his attention inward, as today (Oct. 21) he released his debut solo single “Not Easy.”

Though he’s listed as the track’s lead artist, the producer still enlisted a handful of collaborators — such as Wiz Khalifa, Elle King and X Ambassadors — to lend vocals to the emotive track. The lyrics tell of the difficulties that come with breaking a heart, as Sam Harris of the X Ambassadors sings on the hook. He’s later joined by King and eventually, as the song nears its end, Khalifa jumps in to offer a few verses.

In a statement from Alex, he explained the choice to bring an array of voices together for his debut. “By definition, my role as a producer is always collaborative. I knew that when I put out my first single as an artist, I’d want to collaborate with an unexpected combination of amazing talent.”

He adds that Wiz, Elle, and X Ambassadors “were perfect” because each voice “brought very different perspectives and life experience to the song and the subject of heartbreak, which is what I think makes the track work so well.”
