Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pulled off a huge win in N.Y. — people think Cynthia Nixon is next

In a victory that shocked not only the Democratic Party, but also the entire political spectrum, 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated veteran Congressman Joe Crowley in the New York primary.

Ocasio-Cortez’s stunning win has many thinking about the changes she, and other candidates like her, could bring to New York. The new politician ran on a progressive platform similar to that of former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, whom many pegged as a radical.

Ocasio-Cortez organized her district around an agenda that included backing tuition-free college and affordable housing, addressing climate change, abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as other traditionally progressive positions — and she won, leading many to believe that another political upset could be in the making.

When Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon announced she was running for New York governor earlier this year, she, too, was met with critics who believed her ideals — many of which mirror Ocasio-Cortez’s — were too radical. Nixon also mirrors Ocasio-Cortez in that this, too, is her first political run, and she fought off naysayers who called her inexperienced. After all, legalizing pot has long been seen as a baby step toward socialism, and Nixon’s agenda includes far more progressive suggestions.

Then, critics were skeptical that the former actress would have a fighting chance at defeating current New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the primary race in September. Today, however, there’s new hope among Nixon’s supporters, and even with Nixon herself.

Nixon, who allied herself with Ocasio-Cortez during her campaign, was present last night when the shocking results were revealed. Although she did not mention her opponent by name, Nixon excitedly tweeted this week that she and her progressive ally were “taking on the status quo.”

Nixon’s supporters, and even some who never believed she had a chance, agree: Nixon could win the primary in September and perhaps even the governor’s mansion in November.
