Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reveals the silver lining in Trump's presidency on 'Desus & Mero'
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was the first guest on the new Desus & Mero late-night talk show on Showtime, where she revealed what she sees as a silver lining in the Trump presidency. As should be expected from the frequent Trump critic, the silver lining isn’t from his presidency but instead from the people standing up against it.
“We’re seeing people activate and educate themselves,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “and mobilize, and make amazing art, and hit the streets, and run for office, and that’s really when our country’s at its best. So, ya know, a silver lining in everything.”
So, basically the new @SHODesusAndMero is so great and I loved every bit of it – especially @AOC! #DESUSandMERO pic.twitter.com/FNkGUXSOYP

Fans loved every second of Ocasio-Cortez on the show, but for as much love as she gets on Twitter, she’s also a lightning rod for hate. But she finds a silver lining in all the vitriol as well.
“In a weird way, that stuff is validation that you’re doing something real,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “because if you’re just flying under the radar, just trying to get your check, not rock the boat, then what’s the point of being in politics? What is the point of doing things if you’re just trying to maintain the status quo that doesn’t help people?”
Desus and Mero also joined Ocasio-Cortez at her Washington, D.C., office, along with fellow congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, and it’s clear these freshman representatives are fine with their rebellious reputations.
“I think we have a beef with almost everyone ’cause there’s a lack of courage,” Omar said, “and it seems like we’re all radical because we deeply care for the people we represent and we want to throw down for them.” Ocasio-Cortez added, “Exactly, because for once we’re not just fighting over what is getting done, but we’re fighting over how it’s getting done.”
Desus & Mero airs Thursdays at 11 p.m. on Showtime.
