Alyson Hannigan Can 'Barely Function' After Taylor Swift's 'American Pie' Reference in New Song

Alyson Hannigan appeared to be over the moon about a reference that Taylor Swift made to one of her hit movies on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.
The pop star surprised Swifties on Friday, April 19 when she revealed that the new project she first teased in February was arriving as a double album comprised of 31 songs in total. The Anthology version featured 15 extra songs, including one called “So High School.”
In the song, Swift made a direct reference to American Pie, the film series in which Hannigan starred as Michelle Flaherty.
“I'm watching American Pie with you on a Saturday night / Your friends are around, so be quiet,” Swift sang on the track.
The How I Met Your Mother star is a known Swiftie. Over the last few months, she has posted several photos on social media showing herself wearing merchandise from Swift’s international Eras Tour. Ahead of the new album’s arrival this week, she informed fans that the anticipation surrounding its release had generated “big excitement” in her home.

Once the album dropped, one TikToker posted a video montage featuring the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress demonstrating her enthusiasm for Swift and her music. In one clip, Hannigan wore an Eras Tour T-shirt and began tearing up as she explained that the “Cruel Summer” singer “means too much.”
After the montage was reposted on Instagram, some social media users asked Hannigan directly about her reaction to the American Pie lyric.
“I could barely function yesterday in the very best way,” Hannigan told one Instagram user.
When another fan suggested that the reference “was a nod” to Hannigan specifically, the actress wrote, “that’s what I’m always going to tell myself.”
Fans familiar with Swift’s tendency to plant Easter eggs in her lyrics and music videos have spent the hours since the new album’s release carefully parsing it for hidden meanings. In “So High School,” many fans have noticed that the song also includes a sweet nod to a years-ago interview with Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, in which the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was asked about the “Lover” singer. Swift included an additional reference to her relationship with Kelce in the song's lyric video.
