Alyssa Milano asked to disavow Linda Sarsour of Women's March because of Sharia. Here's her response.

Alyssa Milano was on a panel Sunday at Politicon, where she discussed #MeToo and #TimesUp, but the conversation took an unexpected turn during the Q&A portion. Laura Loomer, a conservative freelance journalist, questioned Milano about her relationship with Linda Sarsour.

“My question is for you, Alyssa Milano. You are friends with Linda Sarsour, and both of you ladies have positioned yourselves as speakers and representatives of the #MeToo movement,” Loomer began.

Sarsour is a Brooklyn, N.Y.-born Palestinian-American Muslim rights activist and co-organizer of the Women’s March movement.

“I want to ask you right now to disavow Linda Sarsour because she is a supporter of Sharia law. And under Sharia law, women are oppressed, women are forced to wear a hijab,” Loomer continued. “My question is, will you please disavow her because she is advocating for Sharia law?”

“She’s not,” Milano calmly replied. “She’s not. But thank you so much for your question.

Sharia is Islamic law derived from the teachings of the Quran and of Muhammad. It’s a set of principles, not rules, relating aspects of life including, marriage, divorce, and prayer. Muslims around the world vary in their practice of Sharia, and Sarsour has called it “misunderstood” on social media.

Loomer approached the stage to prove how Sarsour “endorsed” Sharia while calling the #MeToo “a sham movement.”

“Oh, I don’t think that’s true,” Milano responded, coolly. As Loomer was escorted out of the room by security, the actress said, “If we don’t know how to talk to one another, we’ll never evolve.”

Milano added, “I wish you well — God bless you.”

After the event, Loomer took her grievance to Twitter, calling Milano a “liar” and a “fraud.”

Loomer’s conservative following agreed.

Milano has become one of the most vocal celebrities to speak out against the current administration. In an essay for Refinery 29 published on Monday, Milano stressed the importance of women voting in the upcoming midterm elections.

“Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are waging war against women in the lower courts, ramming through extremist judge after extremist judge in a cowardly assault against a women’s reproductive freedom,” she writes.

“If anti-abortion politicians have their way, they will force even more women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term because they can’t afford an abortion or because the clinics in their state have been shut down,” she continues. “The ability to decide when and whether to become a parent should never be tied to how much money a woman makes, how she gets her health insurance or where she lives. And now, the Trump-McConnell courts will be deciding the validity of these laws.”

Milano concludes: “This is evil. It’s sexist, it’s racist, and it’s going to result in women turning to illegal options. It’s part of the institutionalization of sexual violence against women in our courts and in the laws enacted by our elected representatives. The only thing to do in the few days left to us is to change the world. To bring everyone you know to the polls.”
