Amanda Seyfried didn’t need much convincing to agree to star in The Housemaid alongside Sydney Sweeney. In fact, she didn’t even need to read a script.

The actress, who’s casting in the upcoming thriller was announced on Oct. 10 by Deadline, sat down with SheKnows hours after the news broke. Though our conversation was centered primarily on her recent partnership with a partnership with Synchrony’s CareCredit and Pets Best and her life outside of Hollywood on a remote upstate farm with her children, Seyfried revealed that The Housemaid is the exact kind of role she was looking for to justify spending time away from her quiet family life.

“I want to play a villain,” Seyfried told us. “I honestly didn’t even read the script before I said yes, because I was like, I love [director] Paul Feig, I love Sydney Sweeney, that sounds great.”

“My agents were like, ‘You’re playing a real bitch. The character is awful, she’s a monster in the beginning and then there’s a twist.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t care what the twist is, you’re telling me I can play an asshole?'”

“I just don’t get to do it often,” Seyfried added before remembering her Emmy-winning role in The Dropout. “With Elizabeth Holmes it was very complicated and gray,” she said. “She’s likable, but she’s doing something that’s wrong. So this is my real shot at playing somebody like this.”

The Housemaid will be based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name. In it, Seyfried will play Nina, a wealthy woman who hires a struggling maid, Millie (Sweeney), to work for her and her husband. Millie begins to uncover terrifying secrets about Nina and her husband, Andrew, while also trying to hide her own.

Seyfried and Sweeney will serve as producers on the project alongside McFadden.

“I love my job too,” Seyfried said as a further explanation as to why she’s so invested in balancing work life with her farm. “If I lived at the farm full time, I’d be sad because my job is so artistically satisfying.”
