Amarillo Little Theatre’s 97th season opens with exclusive production of 'Waitress'

The Amarillo Little Theatre (ALT) is poised to mark a historic milestone with the launch of its 97th season, featuring a highly anticipated production of "Waitress", the critically acclaimed musical by Sara Bareilles. This landmark event not only highlights ALT’s rich legacy but also underscores its role as a pioneer in the community theater scene, as the theater secured exclusive early rights to the show, positioning it among the first community theaters nationwide to present this celebrated musical.

Jason Crispin, managing artistic director of ALT, is enthusiastic about the upcoming production. “We are thrilled to bring 'Waitress' to our stage,” Crispin said. “This musical, celebrated for its powerful music and compelling narrative, has made a significant impact on Broadway. Having the opportunity to present it early is a tremendous honor for us and a testament to our theater’s dedication to offering exceptional experiences.”

Crispin, who has devoted 18 years to ALT — including 15 years as the academy director — is in his fourth year as managing artistic director. His deep commitment and extensive experience have been instrumental in upholding ALT’s reputation for producing high-quality theater.

"Waitress," which is based on the 2007 film of the same name, features a score by pop artist Sara Bareilles. The musical made waves on Broadway starting in 2016 and was among the first shows to resume after the pandemic’s disruptions. Crispin emphasized the unique advantage of ALT’s exclusive rights to the show, especially as many theaters still struggle to secure such sought-after productions.

“ALT’s long-standing history and strong reputation for excellence in theater have placed us in a rare position,” Crispin explained. “Securing early access to 'Waitress' reflects our commitment to bringing fresh, engaging content to our audiences. It’s a perfect example of how we leverage our reputation to offer unique theater experiences.”

Set in a charming diner, "Waitress" tells the story of Jenna, a talented pie-maker who finds solace in her craft while navigating a troubled personal life. Through her journey, Jenna learns that the courage to change her circumstances is the key ingredient to transforming her life. The musical’s themes of hope, resilience, and self-discovery are expected to resonate deeply with audiences, offering both entertainment and inspiration.

ALT’s production will showcase a local cast of 22 dedicated volunteers, highlighting a diverse array of talent from the Amarillo community. Crispin is proud of the caliber of performers, who include teachers, students, and professionals, all coming together to create a compelling show.

“Our cast is incredibly talented,” Crispin said. “It’s inspiring to see such a wide range of individuals — from different walks of life — unite to bring 'Waitress' to life. This blend of local talent enriches the experience and makes our production truly special.”

To enhance the audience experience, ALT will transform its stage into a detailed representation of Joe’s Diner from the musical. Additionally, the theater will offer pie-themed concessions, including selections from the local favorite, The Ruffled Cup, adding a flavorful touch to the evening.

ALT has also planned several community engagement activities to complement the production. On Thursday, Sept. 5, the theater will offer a two-for-one ticket special, with students able to enjoy the same deal throughout the run. In collaboration with Amarillo Public Library and Canyon Library, ALT will provide free tickets to library cardholders, further extending access to the arts. A pie-baking contest, in partnership with Brick and Elm Magazine, will be held on Sept. 14, celebrating the show’s culinary theme and inviting community members to participate.

Crispin emphasized the theater’s commitment to making live performances accessible and engaging for everyone. “We believe in the transformative power of theater and want to ensure that it’s available to all members of our community,” he said. “By offering affordable tickets and hosting special events, we aim to attract new audiences and create lasting connections through the arts.”

The production of "Waitress" runs from Sept. 5th to Sept. 22, with performances scheduled Thursday through Sunday.
