A Sept. 13 gala world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival will be followed by a Jan. 2025 theatrical release in the U.S. and India for the Amazon MGM Studios comedy.

“You know, there’s so much sadness in Malegaon. We all need comedy and some laughter in life,” Shaikh, played by The White Tiger star Adarsh Gourav, tells his skeptical friends at one point in the uplifting teaser. Director Reema Kagti’s heartfelt comedy then portrays what happens when filmmaking and friendship in a small town in India collides, when Shaikh makes a campy ode to small town India that becomes a hit with regional audiences.

“Nasir gets inspired to make a film for the people of Malegaon, by the people of Malegaon. He bands together his ragtag group of friends to bring his vision to life, thereby bringing a fresh lease of life into the town. The film is a poignant yet uplifting take on both filmmaking and friendship — and what happens when those two worlds collide,” a synopsis from the producers states.

The Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby Production also stars Shashank Arora, Vineet Kumar Singh, Anuj Singh Duhan, Saqib Ayub, Pallav Singgh, Manjiri Pupala and Muskkaan Jaferi.

Superboys of Malegaon was directed by Kagti based on a script by Varun Grover. The producer credits are shared by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar and Kagti.
