Amazing new 'Stranger Things' promo offers tour of Hawkins's very '80s mall
To quote Robin Sparkles, let’s go to the mall, today, with an all-new Stranger Things teaser. Netflix’s hit paranormal series cleverly gave fans a sneak peek at the show’s third season via a commercial for what will presumably be a major setting: the Starcourt Mall. Boasting big-name brand stores and a state-of-the-art food court, the Starcourt is the biggest thing to hit the tiny town of Hawkins, Ind. since… well, since Radio Shack. Check out the teaser above.
It may be hard for Stranger Things‘s target teen demo to understand in an era where online retail has transformed so many malls into ghostly versions of their former selves, but back in the ’80s these cathedrals to mass consumption were the social hub for junior high and high school life. It’s where you went to hang out, buy the latest audio singles, eat your weight in french fries and also get your first summer job. Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) knows what we’re talking about; Nancy’s ex-boyfriend is slinging scoops at the Starlight’s nautical-themed ice cream shop, Scoops Ahoy, alongside Robin (Maya Hawke), who will be one of the new season’s fresh faces.
Hawkins residents will have to wait a little bit to order their triple chocolate cones, though; according to the ad, the Starcourt won’t open its doors until next summer. That doubles as a coded message to those of us in the real world that Stranger Things Season 3 likely won’t be binge-able until summer 2019. We’re expecting the first few episodes to be during the warm weather months of 1985, when the blockbuster movies included Fletch, The Goonies (if only Bob Newby had lived to see that one), and, of course, Back to the Future. Boy, what we wouldn’t give to hop in our DeLorean’s to see Doc Brown and Marty McFly at the Starcourt’s multiplex capped by a visit to Scoops Ahoy.
Stranger Things’ first two seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
