Amazon MGM Studios Developing YA Sci-Fi Thriller ‘The Loneliest Girl in the Universe’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Amazon MGM Studios is developing the YA novel “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe” as a feature film.
Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum (“Anyone but You,” “Fast X,” the upcoming “Jackpot”) will produce the film alongside Katherine Langford, best known for starring in Netflix’s hit YA series “13 Reasons Why”; Seldy Gray will oversee development for Roth Kirschenbaum Films.

Written by Lauren James, “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe” follows Romy Silvers, the only surviving crew-member of a spaceship travelling to a new planet, on a mission to establish a second home for humanity. “Alone in space,” the official synopsis explains, “she is the loneliest girl in the universe until she hears about a new ship which has launched from Earth – with a single passenger on board. A boy called J.” First published in 2017, “The Loneliest Girl in the World” was nominated for a number of prizes including the Carnegie medal and was shortlisted for the STEAM Children’s Book Prize, which celebrates science in fiction
The project is in early developemnt at the studio with Sarah Conradt-Kroehler writing the script, from a treatment by Gary Dauberman. Conradt-Kroehler is represented by Gersh, Hopscotch Pictures, and Gang Tyer Ramer Brown & Passman.
“The Loneliest Girl in the Universe” is one of a number of successful books penned by the author who is now known as Wren James. James is also the story consultant on the second and upcoming third seasons of Netflix’s “Heartstopper.” Among their other popular titles are “Last Seen Online,” “Green Rising” and “The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker.” James is represented by CAA and Claire Wilson at RCW Literary Agency.
